Baby Root Canals

(A.K.A PULPECTOMIES OR PULPOTOMIES)

Cavities involving the nerve (pulp) can cause toothaches and nerve irritation or infection. Although Ibuprofen or antibiotics may temporarily relieve the pain, it will return unless the tooth is properly treated. A “pulpotomy” describes a pediatric root canal procedure. To save the tooth, the pulp (nervous system and blood supply), bacteria, and decay are removed, and the resulting space is filled with a biocompatible and antibacterial material. Following the completion of the baby root canal, the tooth is weakened, and we will place a crown to protect your child’s tooth from further damage.

Though primary teeth eventually exfoliate, they are necessary for a child’s speech development, esthetics, chewing, and permanent tooth alignment. For children who need a little extra help relaxing during this restorative treatment, nitrous oxide is available.
