Not every broken tooth is the same. The type of break helps determine how urgent treatment is:
Craze Line. A tiny surface crack in the enamel, usually painless and low urgency.
Minor Chip. A small piece of the tooth breaks off, often painless but should still be checked.
Cracked Tooth. The crack runs deeper toward the nerve and may need a crown to prevent it from worsening.
Broken Cusp. A pointed chewing surface breaks off, rarely painful but affects the tooth’s shape.
Serious Break. The break exposes the tooth’s nerve, often causing pain and bleeding, this needs prompt attention.
Even a painless chip is worth having checked, since it can still let bacteria reach the inside of the tooth.
Minor Chips and Cracks. Small chips can often be smoothed or repaired with a tooth colored filling to restore the tooth’s shape.
Deeper Cracks or Breaks. When more of the tooth is affected, a pediatric dental crown may be needed to protect and strengthen it.
Breaks That Reach the Nerve. If the break exposes the tooth’s nerve, a baby root canal may be needed to save the tooth and stop the pain.
Dr. Ezeanolue will examine your child’s tooth to determine which option fits best.
Many chips and minor breaks don’t hurt at all, so your child may not even realize something is wrong. That doesn’t mean it’s safe to wait, a painless chip can still let bacteria reach the inside of the tooth over time.
For breaks that do cause pain, Dr. Ezeanolue will make sure your child stays comfortable during the exam and any treatment needed. Nitrous oxide is available for children who feel anxious.
Most visits for a broken tooth are quick, and many children go home the same day with the problem resolved.

Treatment depends on how severe the break is. Minor chips may need a simple filling, while deeper breaks can require a crown or, in some cases, a baby root canal. Dr. Ezeanolue will recommend the right option after an exam.
It’s still worth having checked soon. A painless chip can expose the tooth to bacteria and lead to bigger problems if left untreated.
Both should be checked, but a broken permanent tooth is generally more urgent since it can’t be replaced naturally the way a baby tooth eventually is.
Cost depends on the treatment needed and your insurance coverage. We accept Nevada Medicaid, CHIP, and many major insurance plans, plus in-house payment plans. Contact our office and we’re happy to walk you through your options.
No, a broken or cracked tooth won’t heal itself. Even minor damage should be evaluated to prevent infection or further breakage.
