Toothache in
Children in Las Vegas

Toothache in children is most often caused by a cavity, though sometimes it’s just something stuck around the tooth. Our Kids Choice Pediatric Dentistry team, part of our Emergency Dentistry care, is here to help you figure out what’s going on and get your child comfortable again.

We also offer a 24/7 after-hours emergency phone line for situations outside our regular office hours.

What Kind of Tooth Pain Does Your Child Have?

Not all toothaches are the same, the type of pain can point to how urgent it is:

Mild Sensitivity. Brief discomfort with hot, cold, or sweet foods, often an early sign of decay.

Persistent Ache. A dull, ongoing pain that doesn’t go away, decay may have reached deeper into the tooth.

Sharp Pain When Biting. Can point to a cracked tooth or something stuck between the teeth.

Swelling or Facial Puffiness. May signal an infection that needs prompt attention.

Fever with Tooth Pain. A sign the infection may be spreading, contact us right away.

What to Do for a Child's Toothache

      1.Rinse with Warm Water.

Have your child rinse their mouth gently to clean the area and soothe the gums.

      2.Floss Around the Tooth.

Something stuck between the teeth can cause pain that feels like a toothache, gently floss to check.

      3.Apply a Cold Compress.

If there's swelling, a cold compress on the cheek can help for short periods.

4.Give a Safe Dose of Pain Relief and Call Us.

Age-appropriate pain relief can help until your child is seen. Contact our office or emergency line so we can schedule an exam.

If the pain persists or comes back, an untreated toothache can lead to a dental abscess, so it's best not to wait.

Finding the Cause of Your Child's Tooth Pain

Cavity-Related Pain. If decay is the cause, a tooth colored filling can often resolve the pain and protect the tooth.

Infection or Deep Decay. When the pain reaches the tooth’s nerve, a baby root canal may be needed to remove the infection and save the tooth.

Severely Damaged Tooth. If the tooth is too damaged to save, an extraction may be the safest option.

Dr. Ezeanolue will examine your child’s tooth and take an X-ray if needed to find the exact cause.

Should You Go to the ER or Call Us?

For most toothaches, calling us first is the better choice. Emergency rooms typically aren’t set up to treat the underlying dental cause, and may only offer temporary pain relief.

Our 24/7 after-hours emergency phone line connects you directly with our team, so your child is seen by a board-certified pediatric dentist.

If your child also has a high fever, facial swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away.

We also welcome anxious and special-needs children, including those with autism, sensory sensitivities, or Down syndrome, and take extra time to make exams comfortable for them.

FAQs About Toothache in Children

What helps a child's toothache fast?

Rinsing with warm water, gently flossing around the tooth, and a cold compress for swelling can help in the short term. Age-appropriate pain relief may also help until your child is seen.

It’s a general guideline some parents use: mild pain lasting under 3 days may improve on its own, but pain lasting longer, or reaching a 3 out of 10 severity, is worth having checked by a dentist.

Urgent care and emergency rooms typically aren’t equipped to treat the underlying dental cause. Calling our office or emergency line usually gets your child faster, more appropriate care.

Signs include swelling in the face or gums, fever, a bad taste, or pain that worsens over time. Contact our office right away if you notice these signs.

Cost depends on the cause and treatment needed, plus your insurance coverage. We accept Nevada Medicaid, CHIP, and many major insurance plans, plus in-house payment plans. Contact our office and we’re happy to walk you through your options.
