A tooth extraction is the removal of a child’s tooth, done only after other options have been considered. Dr. Ezeanolue always tries to save a child’s natural teeth first, but sometimes an extraction is the safest way to protect their oral health. This service is part of our full Restorative Dentistry approach at Kids Choice Pediatric Dentistry.
A tooth may need removal when it’s too decayed to save with a baby root canal, fractured beyond repair, or crowding other teeth ahead of orthodontic treatment. Nitrous oxide keeps your child comfortable throughout.
A few signs can point to a tooth extraction being the right next step. These include:
If your child has an ongoing toothache or a tooth that looks damaged, Dr. Ezeanolue will examine it and explain the best option for your child’s smile. A sudden injury may also need urgent attention from our Emergency Dentistry team.
Relieves Pain and Infection. Removing a badly decayed or infected tooth stops the pain at its source and keeps the infection from spreading to nearby teeth and gums.
Protects the Rest of the Smile. A damaged or crowded tooth can affect how other teeth grow in. If a permanent tooth isn’t ready to come in yet, a space maintainer can hold that spot open.
Prevents Further Complications. Leaving a severely decayed or fractured tooth untreated can lead to more pain, infection, or damage to the teeth around it.
Sometimes a baby root canal can save the tooth instead of removing it, and Dr. Ezeanolue will always explain both options before recommending treatment.
We know the word “extraction” can sound scary to a parent, even more than a filling or a crown. Our team takes extra time to explain the process in simple, friendly language, so your child feels calm and prepared before we begin.
Local anesthesia keeps your child numb during the procedure, and general anesthesia is available for eligible patients, with Outpatient Surgery Center anesthesia for more complex cases.
Most children feel little more than gentle pressure, not pain, during an extraction. Some mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal and usually fades quickly on its own.

Yes. Extractions are routine for children of all ages, including 7-year-olds, when a tooth is too decayed or damaged to save. Dr. Ezeanolue examines the tooth first to confirm it’s the right treatment.
Yes. Pediatric extractions use techniques suited to a young child’s smaller teeth and jaw. Dr. Ezeanolue always evaluates your child’s specific situation before recommending an extraction at any age.
Leaving a severely decayed or damaged tooth untreated can allow infection to spread and may affect nearby teeth or the permanent tooth developing underneath.
Sometimes, Dr. Ezeanolue will examine the tooth and explain the best option. See our Baby Root Canal vs Extraction guide for a full comparison.
